The Beginning Of The Story
The anime series of Rurouni Kenshin starts at the end of the Tokugawa era. Himura Kenshin is walking around Tokyo when all of a sudden someone yells for him to stop. Turning around, he sees Kamiya Kaoru, acting instructor of the Kamiya dojo. Kaoru accuses him of being Hitokiri Battousai (which, of course, is true) who is ruining the prestige of the Kamiya dojo (far from it). That Battousai kills using the Kamiya Kasshin Ryuu, ruining Kaoru's reputation and the dojo. She pulls out his sword and, once discovering that the blade and flat end are reversed, deduces that he is not the one she's looking for.
A commotion comes up, and Kaoru runs off to the scene, finally finding the one she was looking for. The man was Gohei, using the title of Battousai and kills people using the Kamiya Kasshin technique. Kaoru attacks Gohei, he counterattacks, Kaoru gets hurt and guess who comes to the rescue. Kenshin saves Kaoru from a beating and gets rid of Gohei temporarily. He asks her why did she do such a reckless thing, she answers saying that she has to, for her deceased father. Kenshin is in the middle of telling her what a great spirit she has when she faints.
Kaoru wakes up at the dojo, discovering that her wounds have been bandaged. She then steps out and sees Kenshin playing with Ayame and Suzume, the granddaughters of her neighbor, Dr. Genzi. Kenshin mistakes Ayame and Suzume as Kaoru's sisters. Kaoru discovers Kenshin cooking ability ("Could it be the wasabi?" "You're a better cook than I am, my friend!").
Kaoru's last three students then arrive and tell her that they are quitting because they've been branded as murderers. Kaoru falls into depression. In the middle of taking a bath, Kenshin walks into her thinking that she was trying to drown herself ("Kaoru-dono, wait! Don't drown yourself~ oro?!"). Kaoru gets mad and orders Kenshin to sleep in the shed. Kenshin then asks if there were any rebellious students in the dojo. Kaoru denies all this. Only when she was lying in bed does she recall a certain student that disobeyed her father's teachings. Her father smashed his right thumb and, right then and there, swore revenge on the Kamiya dojo (he gives young Kaoru an evil look in the flashback). Realizing this, she runs out to apologize. No answer and she gets annoyed ("Hey, I'm apologizing here ok!"). Still no answer. She steps inside only to find out that he was gone. Regretfully, she whispers that she should have asked for his name.
Gohei then comes attacking the dojo. Kaoru, even with her skill on the shinai, is defeated by Gohei and with his fist on her shirt, offers her to his followers. Kenshin comes, wrecks the fingers of Gohei's two hands, and saves the day. Kaoru discovers that this rurouni is actually the real Hitokiri Battousai. She asks him to stay. Kenshin says he has to keep going. Kaoru finally asks for his name. Kenshin answers with a Bond-like expression ("Kenshin. Himura Kenshin." "Well, if you must go..."). She turns around. Expecting to hear the door closing.
The door closes. Kaoru looks as if she was about to cry. Then Kenshin speaks ("I might as well stay here. It's inevitable anyway."). Awww... shucks.
